Job Lottery

In a move to allow more opportunities to workers who may be overqualified a chance at employment, ???? State officials have created a job lottery. Based on the popular regular State lottery idea, companies can submit job vacancies to the state run job lottery. Job seekers register to the lottery site, mail, or state gov. offices. The seekers are then screened and placed under categories based on skills, and any bias for over qualification is taken out. A panel interview is conducted by the agency and a standard ranking is given to a candidate, to qualify for the myriad of possible positions. Every night along with the regular lottery, an employment lottery takes place and winners have 24hrs to call the employment Lottery hot-line. State officials and businesses alike have deemed this program a success after 6mo of trials and an additional 6mo since the program went state wide. Ms. Paxil of the Lottery board states "We are able to match jobs to job seekers in record times and fill positions faster than was possible before." She goes on to say about the employment numbers,"We are seeing dramatic decrease of unemployment rates and state consumer spending is on the rise showing we are in the right direction for moving out of a recession." Some of the requirements of the job seekers is that they must be willing to agree to a term of minimal employment with a range of 1 to 3 years. "We want to ensure we hire people and they stick around even after potentially better jobs become available." says Mr. Chesshir a regional manager for a retailer business. So far the public opinion has be highly favorable towards the lottery and state officials are looking into making this a more permanent part of operations even after the recession is in the past. So if your looking for a job, any job apply and you could be working sooner than later. "It beats interviewing at every place under the sun only to be turned down because of a coin toss. You interview once and then bid your time on unemployment or welfare hoping your number gets called so you can go to work." Says Selina of ?????. "I've been unemployed now for nearly a year since they closed the plant and my only hope was they would call us back, which was not likely. I couldn't even afford to play the real lottery. But its free to play the labor lottery and if you win you feel good to start accomplishing something again." says Mike a recent winner for a stock position a local grocery. "As people start working again people start spending again, and this spending sends signals to business to hire, and thus Economies thrive." Prof. Aukbaur of ????? College. He continues "Will this concept work? So far it seems to be, its jump starting the economy and doing faster than normal job hiring processes have in the past."

Note Worthy News

Man arrested today after being implicated by self in an online harassment suit. In a bizarre twist of events Micheal ???????? hired a lawyer 3 months ago after being harassed online when using both facebook and myspace. He had received a friend request from Greg ??????? who was a contact of a friend of his. Micheal's nightmare thus began. He started receiving unfavorable remarks and torrid remarks on things he would say to his other friends. Greg began ridiculing him and saying he knew where he lived and would like to visit. Greg sought the police department and followed their advice and began taking notes and removed Greg from all of his accounts. This didn't detour Greg from continuing harassment, but in a more subtle way. Using the alias Regg, Greg setup a site devoted to harassment of Micheal and spammed a large number of his contacts with the new site. Greg had registered with false information and it took sometime to track him down. Police said they had a cyber unit start a track of online activity when they noticed some peculiarities. Dept. Verrin, "We noticed that all of Greg and Regg's posts were coming from Micheal's IP, we immediately sent a team over to his house as we suspected Greg had compromised his system." It appears not only did Greg compromise Michael's system but Greg was Michael. Dr. Pallo worked with investigators and found that 6mo ago Michael suffured a minor breakdown. As a coping mechanism and unbeknown to family or friends he developed a split personality. Dr. Pallo said, "Normally we see this type of behavior act out as voice heard in a persons head, Schizophrenia, but this is a delayed version of Schizophrenia."
The case for obvious reasons was dropped and Michael is now seeing a Cyber-psychiatrist online twice a week in 2nd life.

Useless Time Machine

It's amazing we stand on the brink of a new dawn, as the makers of a new time travel device are honored in Europe. Called Retroprobe, the developers created a robot with an instruction set to collect samples and return to the capsule with in a set amount of time while in history. The pod was sent back to the year 1948, in an area at the time was vacant. Upon the pod's return the robot was released and samples where scrutinized. carbon dating found that the samples were indeed from 1948.
The scientist excited then tried another experiment and sent plants and insects in the pod to again 1948 and immediately returned the pod for observation. When the pod came back the plants and insects were normal. Next they created an even larger pod and sent a trained dog to again 1948 with commands to exit and return. The good dog did as it was trained and when the pod returned the dog was in normal health, and samples of the oxygen were found to be consistent of air quality of that area at the time.
Finally they were ready for human trials. They again chose to send subjects back to 1948 and do progressively more riguruss tests and collections. All were successful, and now the scientists insist that they do historical marker checks and record history via photographic means as a test of bringing back history. The went back in time every 100 years until 1048. At which they decided to go back to the age of the dinosaurs to get proof once and for all. So they got the pod ready and sent it back 30 million years into the past. After the scheduled time frame the pod didn't return. Now the pod was designed to return after 48 hours. When that time came the pod did return but not in the exact same place where it had left. So far the time machine left and returned to same spot it was sent. Luckily for the scientists they had put a homing beacon on the device in the case this happened. The found the case 400 miles away from its location and it appeared as if it had suffered a fall from quite a distance.
The person inside was dead and things were also difficult to explain. The autopsy report indicated the subject died from exposure to extreme cold, similar to conditions found in space. So this perplexed scientists. Many theories arose and people were debating the location of even the Earth. But after much debate a person spoke up with the Idea that they should look at historical and biblical records and start tracing back from those little by little and see if there was any existence before the silly notion of creation. To humor the man the scientist sent back the original pod with the robot to collect samples starting at just before the supposed flood. The pod returned with samples and they kept doing this until the last mission it completed.
With this mission the pod actually entered into empty space, not unlike when then person went back to the age of the dinosaurs. this time though something interacted with the pod, sending a message back. When the pod returned there was no one there to retrieve it. Earth was completely empty of all life. The scientist were gone, the people were gone, everything was gone. The message the robot inside began to speak as the pod opened up. "I am returning the day was today, the hour was now."

There were two kids named Marty and James.
Marty says to James "Knock, knock."
"Who's there ?" James replies.
""Boo" Marty says.
"Boo who?" James answers.
To which Marty responds "Don't cry it's only a joke," and gives a slight giggle.
James not understanding the joke states "That's not funny."
Feeling hurt he goes to his teacher and says that James was bullying him on the play ground. Explaining his version of what transpired Marty's parents are informed that they must pickup their child immediately from school for reasons of bullying other children.
They comply in utter shock, and bewilderment. The school contacts social services to investigate the child's home, and local law enforcement is contacted for a formal investigation and to pursue bullying charges be brought against Marty.
They substantiate the charges based on the state law and school rules, and open a criminal case against Marty. Marty is removed from his home via social services and placed in a juvenile detention center. His parents are then notified that they were facing charges of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.
Marty was found guilty and remanded to the state for rehabilitation. Once complete, then to foster care.
Marty's Parents were found guilty as well, teaching and indoctrinating bullying practices and sentenced to life w/o parole.

In our modern day and age it's not what you say but how it is interpreted. Sure it’s a little far-fetched but just you wait until it happens for real. I read a few articles today about people’s freedom of speech having been squelched via posting online. The Internet is a public forum but, a web page, blog, etc. They’re more of a private residence and you must navigate to that place to read its contents. By doing so you are making a conscious effort to read someone’s thoughts, ideas, and ramblings. If you don't like what you read that is OK, you don't have to go there. You can click the little back arrow and go somewhere else.

My Online Shared Regsiter

Here is something that I created to help Naomi and I keep track of our spending and be able to use with our new web enabled phones. I built a fancy Balance, Register, Category/List and Report in Excel. Then I ported the essentials to Google Docs. The essentials were the balance of our bank accounts, the register, and the categories(not really required though). I then created a form on Google Docs which handles the entering of information into the Register just like a checkbook register. The benefit to this is that both Naomi and I have access to this register where as if we each had our own register we would have to reconcile to each others regularly to get an accurate balance. The information in the registered is then copied and pasted into the fancy one in excel where I can get monthly and yearly spending reports and balance changes on loans, retirement accts, etc. Here are screen shots of the online forms with some personal data blacked out but you should get the idea. Notice the color differences on the balance, a rule is set so that green is show to have a balance greater than $xx.xx and yellow is between that and $xx.xx and then red indicates you're balance is below min yellow amt or negative.

What's New

Naomi went to Kansas over the weekend on a whirlwind tour with Niki a good friend from her work. They seemed to have enjoyed themselves, they left Thursday night and came back Sunday. The objective was to put one a couple rabies clinics in Manhattan, and Hutchinson.

That left the boys and me on our own over the weekend. We were as usual up to no good, but the boys did out do themselves by weeding out their toys and cleaning their room. They were excited to find a toy that we had gotten for them a few months before we moved to Ohio, headbanger bowling.

Noteworthy Christopher signed up for Cub Scouts and he is a tiger cub. We had his first pack meeting on Sept 29th, which was more informational for parents, but the kids did play a game and got a snack. We signed the whole family up for 'Scary Camp 3' which is at Camp Oyo.

2009 Scioto County Fair

We went to the fair last week on Thursday, saw the free Circus and the kids rode some of the small rides. We went again on Friday, saw the Mel Tillis concert, and rode some of the big rides with friends. Here are some pictures from the two nights.

Lose It!

Since I've gotten my new I phone, all I here is people saying they got an app for that. Well it's true, mostly, and I wanted to tell everyone about this app I found that is pretty neat. Lose It! by FitNow Inc. is a weight loss and management tool. When you set it up you enter your starting weight, your ideal weight, and then choose between 1/2 to 2 pounds to loose a week. It then calculates your daily allowable calories. Ok but you say but figuring out my calories from every meal is so hard. Sure but Lose It! includes a listing of just about every food under the sun, including Supermarket name brands, and restaurant foods. With a search feature that lets me type in say tuna salad sandwich and lists options I add it and adjust to match the size of sandwich. Additionally you can add exercise and it has calories burned for just about everying including mowing the lawn, walking the dogs, and more. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now and it's really easy and simple. However, last Thursday I went over by about 1000 calories because we ate at Pizza Hut and I had 4 peices of pizza, oops. I had to hit the treadmill for about an hour to burn off the excess calories. You can even add your own foods, exercises, and reciepies. Here are a couple sites with pics and reviews to check it out.

It's gettin' hot in here...

So back in May our A/C was on the fritz and would freeze up and then it would get ella hot. So we tried to get it fixed but to no avail as it had a bad leak. So the landlord had it replaced with some kind of super duper heat pump 3000 thing-a-ma-jiggy. This was toward the middle of June, so when we got back from vacation it was nice and cool........... Then NAOMI cooked a pot of chili. Emphasis here is in jest in reality we don't know what caused it to freeze up like a giant block of ice. When I came home Tuesday it was nearly 80F so I asked Naomi what was wrong. We turned off the a/c after seeing the problem. The a/c guys that installed it came by and checked it out and said the would call the landlord and get back with us
......s.....t.....i.....l.....l.........w.....a.....i.....t.....i.....n.....g.............

So Wednesday the boys slept on the spare bed because it was to hot on thier bunk beds. Last night the boys slept on the floor next to the box fan and Naomi was on the couch. I slept on the bed drenching in sweat. Waking up in this kinda heat feels like waking up in the middle of a shower, your wet, except you don't smell better afterwards.

So I have decided.

Ifs dey's ain't gon'ter fixee de dim t'ing den we gon'ter git dur slep en'dur de staz in de tind.

Translation: We're going to sleep in a tent outside.

Flashbacks to Kansas

Over the weekend, Saturday to be exact, I thought we where magically back in Kansas. Between 3 and 5:30 in the afternoon we were under a tornado warning. Now I thought we moved away from tornadoes but I guess not. One did touch down and hit Waverly, to the North of us, and Wheelersburg, to the East. Luckily for us we missed out. I would have to say that in the event one did come by it would be gone before we knew what hit us. At least in Kansas it was flat and when you looked outside you could see more than just up. I looked out the front door to watch the sky but all I saw was rain and trees, trees, and more trees. Oh the hills.

4th of July Weekend

We had a fun weekend up in Cincinnati. Along with Tim and Chrystal we stayed at Great Wolf Lodge next to Kings Island. The boys really enjoyed being able to go down all but one slide at the park. Their favorite would be a toss up between Coyote Cannon and River Canyon Run. They also spent a lot of time crossing Big Foot Pass and Christopher enjoyed the waves in Slap Tail Pond.

We spent the night Saturday in a Cabin suite, which had a small cabin built in with a bunk bed and small TV.

Everyone had fun and we were all worn out.

Short Week

What a week! I got back into my first full week at work since my Loooong Vacation. I really enjoyed spending time with family and friends. I set up the new blog and also played around a bit with the settings to try and share the boys' agenda. Spending way too much time playing with google calendars. No luck, though, with the calendar posting their Daily agenda.... Christopher went and saw the new Ice Age movie today. He said it was really awesome; they got to sit in the front row, drink Pepsi, and said that Mommy, Jonathan, and I have to go see it. Jonathan visited the museum and made a large paper flower for Mommy. It was hard to decipher what all he saw at the museum as he incorporates stories in with the telling of his visit. He did, however, make mention of seeing a real bow-and-arrows and a gun, which was used on bad people. Both Naomi and I had the day off but it was very busy running errands all around town. The good news is that lots was accomplished, the bad news was that I missed nap time and didn't play any video games.... Oh! Naomi adds that she did her very first leg amputation today and it went well. Ok, so maybe she likes to work on her day off, but *cough, cough* who doesn't *cough, cough*.... Anywho, all's well in SO OH (Southern Ohio)! Wishing everyone a Happy 4th!

P.S. Happy Birthday Jeremy!!!!!

The New Blog

I created a new blog for the boys nightly reading, and I added it to list in this blog so you can see what books they are reading over the summer. Starting this week we are going to the library and picking out 1 book each and then reading them before bed. So far so good. To see what books they have been reading head to deanboysreading.blogspot.com.

New Phone

Today the boys and I went to the AT&T store. I was looking to get a new phone for work. I had been looking at getting an htc fuze, which is a windows mobile phone. My brother really got me to take another look at the iphone. Well after seeing it in action at the store and how easy It was for the boys use, I was sold. I purchased the 8 gig and now I the only reason to take it back would be for the 16 gig. By the way this entry was made from my new phone.

First Library Card

Yesterday when I picked up the boys from their new day care for the summer, we walked a block over to the public library. Both boys really liked the youth library part. I just pointed out where to look for books and they were off looking for books in no time. I did have to remind them to be quite a couple times but they were whispering in no time. Each of them got their very own library card and checked out their first book. I hope we can check out a new book every night and enjoy reading in the evening. The books were 'Hurry and the Monarch' & 'Oh! The Thinks You Can Think!'. Look for posts under the deanboys here for updates on books they're reading.

Memorial Weekend

We went to Fort Rapids in Columbus on Saturday, which is an indoor waterpark and hotel FortRapids.com. It was a lot of fun we went with Tim and Crystal, and stayed in a 6 person room Saturday night. We arrived around six o'clock and got checked in and headed to the water park right away. We played on the big water feature in the center which had two big slides the boys could ride, a couple smaller ones, and several features like buckets and water hoses to play with. Then Tim, Crystal, Christopher, and I headed up to the shoot out racers slide up 4 flights of stairs and raced. Christopher enjoyed that. He wasn't able to ride the tube slides but I think he rode down that one about 10 times. They had 3 tube slides, a lazy river which both boys liked, a 4ft deep play area, and a kiddie area for wee ones. Everyone had a great time. We tried the spaghetti warehouse for dinner and came back around 11pm and everyone crashed. We checked out Sunday by 11am and played at the water park till about 5pm the boys were sad to go. They wanted to live there. It was a very fun weekend.

Dodger, Dodger.

On Monday, Ben went to Lowe's. He left the shed in the yard open (as we have done innumerable times in the 8 1/2 months we have lived here) and upon his return he discovered a mess. One of the dogs had torn up a bag of Ortho Maxx lawn pesticide (and likely ingested a portion of it). Not knowing which one(s) may be the culprit(s), I put it out of my mind for the time.

The following morning as Christopher and Jonathan were going to get on the bus, I realized that Jasmine and Crimson were with them, but not Dodger. I heard some noise from the utility room (with a doggy door where they spend the nights) so I opened the door to let him in. Boy, was he a sight for sore eyes. He was twitching and trembling and shaking so bad he could hardly stand, much less walk.

So I took him to work with me and gave him massive doses of subcutaneous fluids and methocarbamol. I looked up the toxicity signs associated with the active ingredient in the insecticide and he matched it perfectly. Even down to the seizures. He has had 2 total and both were stopped promptly with IV diazepam. He is better this evening than he has been yet, and hopefully will continue to a full recovery.

But were we surprised by what he did? Not really. Dodger has always been a "trash hound" and tears up and/or eats almost anything. It served as a good reminder, though, to either keep the shed closed or put all toxic things up high. Because we will not always be able to stop the kids or pets from doing potentially harmful things to themselves, we have to do our best to not put them in a situation where there is that possibility. Not if it can be prevented. Boys and animals: they keep us on our toes so life is never dull at the Dean house.

Birdcage Stand 101

We have been wanting to build a stand for our pigeon Grace, and today I decided to git-r-done... First I went to Lowes and spent 2-3 hours on deciding what materials to buy. Option 1 buy mostly precut wood and assemble it, cost came out to nearly $80. Option 2 buy a 2"x4"x8", 2'x2'x1/4" piece of oak, and a 2'x4'x1/2" piece of oak, cost about $14....... Deciding.... Still deciding..... got some pieces of wood in my cart.... put the pieces of wood back.... looked around.... put some different pieces of wood in my cart.... put those back.... walked around some more.... Looked at tools.... Decided to go with option 1 and buy a circular saw. Next I had to get screws, and wouldn't you know I started the process all over again in terms of finding screws. I really think next project I will not only make a design but also plan on the materials and assembly devices before hand.

So I get home about noon and decide I will get started right away, my first thought was to cut 4 1x1x36" strips for the legs. First time to use a circular saw I tried my first cut at the 36" mark. I got almost all the way through and it got stuck so being careful I stopped to check it out. Just about a 1/4" corner piece still attaching the 2 pieces so I tried again but this time the 2x4 shook violently and shot up large chunks of wood. I then turned the board over and cut from the other end and it fell to the ground... My heart was pounding with visions of me cutting my hand off or having my eye gouged by flying wood chips. I decided at this point to call it quits, I was having no more of this. If you have ever seen me play guitar hero on hard or expert than I exhibit this type of tirade quite often when things are new or difficult.

I went back inside ate my lunch, about which time Naomi called and I spilled the beans about my horrific experience. Then I took a nap... zzzz....zzzz....zzzz. Then I decided I would try again. But no way was I cutting the 2x4 length wise they would just have to do as is. So I started up about 2:30pm and the boys came home about 4 and of course were interested for a while and then left to be more entertained watching noggin or playing wii. I finally finished up about 6pm after coming up with a last minute solution to adding a shelf.

Picture Server or Low Disk Space

So last night and today I have been moving files around from 2 laptops and the desktop trying to consolidate. I have been perplexed in my storage options with 3 usb drives (1 doesn't work exactly) and 3 internal drives on the desktop I have had to move files here and there and then back again to get files off the laptops and onto the desktop. blah, blah, blah... I have finally moved all the videos, pictures, and documents to the desktop which acts as a central repository.  Why might you ask is this necessary? Back in May of 08 I wrote a little webapp that will take all our pictures in our picture folder and shares them online, it uses a menu structure based off the folder structure in a basic webpage. The nice feature is that when I add a new folder with pictures, it automatically updates the menu so you can browse them instantly and I don't have to do any work on adding uploading etc. So where is this web address, http://comingsoon.... not running yet but I will try and get a beta up and running by next Friday. (that is a bogus address don't tryit) I will get a realone soon also.... Jeremy?hehe

Wii Timeout Revisited

Ok so some of you may be wandering what happened with the Wii timeout. Thankfully everyone cooperated very well the boys took it very hard but they managed to survive. We called the timeout off on Friday, Feb 27, partly due to the fact that Dave(brother-in-law) and I had a Wii date, hehe. We played Super Smash Bros. Brawl(SSBB), against each other online.

The experience has turned out good and we have all limited our time on the Wii and other game systems. The boys are hitting their bedtime regularly now and we have even been reading a chapter a night in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Christopher said his books he reads are to easy and wanted something more so I started to read this and they oddly enough have been interested.

Also Wii time is only allowed if the boys had good behavior at school and home and are consistent in getting up and going to bed, so far so good.

As for me well I hope we don't need another Wii timeout anytime soon as my time would be spent fixing things around the house instead, ugh... :P

A Wii timeout

OK back on Valentines day Naomi got a Wii for the whole family, yes we have been wanting one for a long time, but they always seem to be sold out. The system came with Wii sports and this game is very  fun and easy for the whole family. I must say that Christopher must have inherited the Swisher bowling gene as he averages above 160 and his best game is a 204. Even Naomi enjoys playing and since we purchased it we have acquired a total of 4 controllers and 4 games. I got the Wii Play game after getting 2 more additional controllers and almost took it back but Naomi is very good at the games on this one I think it comes from having steady hands ... Dr....

Since we purchased it we have all had a lot of fun.... but then something extraordinary happened, bedtime started getting later and later for the boys and for us. Sunday night the boys got to bed after 10pm and we didn't make it to bed till nearly 3am. The next morning the boys missed the bus and were late to school. So the Wii and all other video games and a few other select luxuries (TV for 1) have all been sent to time out so we can all get back on track.

About every other word out of the boys mouth is I want to play Wii. Example I would say boys its time to get ready for bed and they would reply, but we want to play wii. They wake up and the first thing out of their mouth is can we play Wii, even though the bus will be here in about 30 min. I to have seemed to find extra time to play Wii and as a result let things lax around the house here and there.

So far we are on day two of our Wii timeout and it seems to be working well. Usually its a battle to get the boys to sleep at night but last night they both got ready and went to bed at the right time and Christopher was asleep 10min later. Jon was quite when he is usually up talking till after 10pm. Christopher was up bright and early this morning at 6am so progress is being made.

Been a while

So it's been some time but I will try to post more often.

So a quick update:
Naomi is getting along quite well at the clinic, and now even has a few conferences under her belt. (One of which was in Orlando :P) We recently purchased a silver 4 door Honda from Tim Wells sister and brother-in-law. Now she doesn't have a rustbucket to drive to work... She has got to do quite a bit of birds as of late and the clinic actually has a resident bird named margo which knows a few phrases and words.

Christopher is doing well in school, this quarter his teacher said a conference was not required. So his behavior has greatly improved. He is playing basketball in an instructional league at the church and likes it a lot. He likes the pg position, has some tricky passes, and prefers not to shoot.

Jonathan is also doing well in school and seems to be very outgoing in public, more so than he used to be. We went to the hair salon last week and he went with the stylist all by himself and told her he wanted a kings crown stlye hair cut and that he was a wild guy. Later while we were waiting in the lobby for Naomi to finish her hair cut a couple of ladies walked in and sat down. Jonathan went over and introduced himself and let them know that he was king Jonathan and his hair cut was a crown.

I to am doing well, no work but I keep busy round the house. I haven't heard back yet from Marshall but I will start looking again at some other options and knocking on doors and sending out resumes etc. I have become more practiced at guitar hero and can play many songs on hard or expert. I have also found a nack for playing songs on my cell phone which I started a word doc with the keypad translated as notes.
FYI list of songs I can play on my cell phone
Jesus Loves Me, Mary had a little lamb, Row Row Row your Boat, London Bridges, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Silent Night, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Star Spangled Banner, Up on the House Top.
And some say I have to much time on my hands.

Well that's it for now and more to come soon.
